MOUNT PISGAH MISSION EVENT – AUGUST 3RD – 11TH, 2019
We are taking it to the community! Join us the week of August 3rd through 11th, 2019 as we take the church beyond the four walls! There are 21 different mission events scheduled. Choose one, two, five, ten, or all twenty-one and let’s make Christ Shine!! Check out the descriptions of each mission opportunity and sign up:
#1 “Under the Bridge”
Leader: Hetty Savage/Anna Bloch Date: Saturday, August 10, 2019
Summary: Volunteers will be needed to prepare a meal at the church on Saturday, 8/10 and deliver it to the “Under the Bridge” location in downtown Greensboro. The meal will need to be set up and served to the homeless. Following the meal, Mt. Pisgah will be leading a worship service for the homeless with Rev. Cody Johnsen delivering the message. Clean up will follow at the end.
#2 “Greensboro Urban Ministry”
Leader: Donald Thomas Date: Friday, August 9, 2019
Volunteers will be preparing a meal for the homeless at Greensboro Urban Ministry (GUM). The meal will be prepared at Mt. Pisgah Church and delivered to GUM and served to the homeless of Greensboro.
#3 “Out of the Garden”
Leaders: Rick and Molly King Date: Saturday, August 10 AM and PM time slots
The Fresh Mobile Markets (FMM) takes place at 4-6 high need schools and food deserts every week. They distribute 50-70 lbs of food per family. Depending on the site they have between 50-80 families at each Fresh Mobile Market. This food includes shelf-stable food from the government, bread/dessert, milk/juice, fresh produce, pizza, and meat. Frozen food is also provided when available. There will be a morning shift and an afternoon shift each lasting 2 hours. Closed toed shoes are a requirement for all volunteering with Out of the Garden Project. Heavy lifting is involved but can be avoided if you aren’t able. Volunteers will be responsible for helping to unload the truck and prepare boxes of food for each family. Volunteers below the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
#4 “Community Housing Solutions”
Leader: Don Cohan Date(s): Monday, Tuesday August 5, 6
The Mt. Pisgah Work Team will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity in the Greensboro area. ERT Certification will not be required to participate in this mission, only a willing heart for mission. This event will be open for those 16 years and older. This event will be very hands on. Volunteers will be needed for both Monday and Tuesday.
#5 “Bark in the Boro Rescue Event”
You can’t buy love, but you can rescue it! Leader: Kim Longe Date: Saturday, August 3, 2019 9 AM – 2 PM
Multiple rescue organizations will be on our lawn at Mt. PIsgah showcasing their adoptable animals and the services they supply for our community. Supply donations will be accepted for all the Rescues. Kona Snow Cone Truck will be present for 2 hours, so everyone can purchase a snow cone to cool off.
#6 “Water Bottle Ministry”
Leader: Cody Johnsen Date: Saturday, August 10, 2019
Bottles of water will be purchased, labels will be created and attached to the water bottles with the Mt. Pisgah logo. Volunteers will be set-up at stations in our local parks and will distribute cold bottles of water to those walking, etc. in the parks.
#8 “Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center (GPCC)“
Leader: Margaret Lewis Date: Tuesday, August 6, 2019, 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Diaper bags will be purchased for 20 expectant mothers working with the GPCC to be given to them before the birth of the baby. A group of volunteers will also go down to the GPCC to do various tasks including sorting clothing, cleaning the GPCC and possibly the mobile unit as well as any other tasks the staff assigns the group to do.
#9 “Happy Feet“

Vickie Plott who teaches ESL in Guilford County Schools has identified 60 Refugee children in need of tennis shoes to start back to school. A tree will be put up with tags with each child’s name and size of tennis shoes on them. Members of the congregation will be encouraged to take a tag and purchase a pair of new tennis shoes. Boxes will also be placed in the Volunteer Office and at Texas Roadhouse to collect “gently used” children’s tennis shoes for the children to have an extra pair to play in.
#10 “Camp Carefree“

Camp Carefree in Stokesdale, NC, provides free “summer camp”experiences for kids ages 6 – 16 with chronic illnesses, including cancer, spina bifida, epilepsy and more. You can read more about Camp Carefree at http://www.campcarefree.org/.
Alumni Weekend for chronically ill young adults who recently “graduated” out of the full week-long experience will be August 9-11. There are multiple volunteer opportunities depending on your interest and availability.You can help with camp activities, provide general assistance to campers and counselors, help transport wheelchair bound campers, be a 1-on-1 counselor to a camper, among other things. Help is primarily needed the evening of Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10. Based on your schedule, come on out a few hours one or multiple days, or all day Saturday! We would like to have a least 15 volunteers Friday evening and over 30 volunteers throughout Saturday.
(If you are interested in being a 1-on1 counselor, please let Brandon know, and he will get you more information. Also, if available and interested in helping clean up Sunday after camp ends, please let Brandon know.)
Please note that trained medical personnel are on site to help campers and volunteers and will only be given tasks to suit their ability and interest. The Camp appreciates any and all help! We will plan to coordinate transportation for those who may need it.
#11 “Fire Station Meals“
Leader: Keith Ingold Date(s) of Mission: August 6, 7, 8
Keith Ingold, a retired Greensboro Firefighter, has identified Station 40 on Pisgah Church Road as the closest Fire Station to Mt. Pisgah. Volunteers will be preparing meals that will be delivered to the Fire Station on Aug. 6, 7, and 8. Volunteers will be needed to assist in preparing the meals, delivering the meals and having a prayer to bless the firefighters and the firehouse when delivered.
#12 “Blessed Table Food Pantry“
Leader: Michelle Koranteng Date(s): Ongoing
The Blessed Table opened in 2004, as a cooperative ministry of eight United Methodist Churches. With a mission of helping feed the hungry in the Greensboro community, over 4,000 bags of food are given out annually to members of the community who are struggling to put food on the table. The Blessed Table exists entirely through donations and works solely through the efforts of volunteers. There is no paid staff. During “Go and Serve” week, Mt. Pisgah will be collecting nonperishable food. Volunteers will also be needed to deliver the food to the Blessed Table location in Greensboro.
#13 “Mulch for Weekday School Playground“
Leader: Chris Sharp Date: Thursday, August 8th, 2019 Late afternoon
A load of mulch will be delivered to the Mt. Pisgah Weekday School Playground. Volunteers will work with about 25 Boy Scouts from Mt. Pisgah to spread the mulch. This mission will touch the Mt. Pisgah Weekday School as well as the community.
#14 “Teacher’s Appreciation Luncheon“
Leader: Nancy Cassill Date of Mission: Tuesday, 8/6/2019
Local Guilford County Teachers from Mt. Pisgah have been identified and each one has been given invitations to distribute to fellow teachers. A catered luncheon will be held at the church and each teacher will be given a goody bag along with a $50 gift card to Wal*Mart or Target to purchase school supplies for the upcoming school year. Volunteers will be needed to help set up for the luncheon, put together goody bags, serve the luncheon and clean-up after the luncheon.
#15 “Lecture Series at Whitestone“
Leader: Pastor Jeff Johnsen Date: Monday, August 5th, 2019 7:00 PM
Reverend Jeff Johnsen will be conducting a lecture series at Whitestone. Volunteers will be needed to mingle with the residents that evening.
#16 “Shut-In Visitation“
Leader: Ginger Pfister Date(s): All week
Volunteers will be sent out in groups of two to visit shut-ins during the “Go and Serve” week. 40 volunteers will be needed made up of 20 teams of 2 each. Some of these will be delivering Holy Communion as well.
#17 “Abbotswood Retirement Center – Ice Cream Social/Short Worship Service“
Leader: Sheyanne Johnsen Date: Tuesday, Aug. 6 Mid Afternoon
There will be a short worship service at Abbotswood Retirement Center followed by an ice cream social. This event will take place mid afternoon on the 6th.
#18 “Preparation of Bag Lunches“
Leader: Rebecca Hansley Date: August 8 Daytime
Volunteers will be needed to purchase lunch items to be placed in ziploc bags to be distributed to areas of need in the Greensboro area. Bags will need to be assembled during the day on Thursday, August 7th to be distributed on Thursday night.
#19 “Distribution of Bag Lunches“
Leader: Andy/Danny Comer Date: August 8 Late afternoon/evening
Pastor Jeff along with Andy and Danny Comer will work to identify places of need in the Greensboro community for a distribution of bag lunches. These will be delivered in the late evening/night of August 7th.
#20 “Carolina Estates Retirement Center Ice Cream Social and Worship Service“
Leader: Vickie Apple Date: August 5
Volunteers will be needed to assist with an ice cream social at Carolina Estates Retirement Center and also assist the Senior pastor/Associate pastor with a worship service for the residents.
#21 “Siloam Missionary House Snow Camp, NC“
Leader: Mark Hardy Date: Thursday, August 8 9:00 AM
Siloam Missionary Homes was established in 1992 to provide a “a place for missionaries to call home”, located on 33 acres in a gated village in Snow Camp, North Carolina. Volunteers will be needed to do physical labor including repairs, landscaping, and light construction. Snow Camp is about a 45 minute drive from Greensboro. If enough volunteers sign-up , the church bus could possibly be taken.
